On April 14, 2011, Duffield students put on an phenomenal production of ''Bells Are Ringing'' (screenplay and musical score by Betty Comden and Adolph Green) on the Horizon Stage.
Valerie Waterman gives an outstanding, convincing portrayal of Ella Peterson, a Brooklyn telephone answering service operator who works in the basement office of her boss, Sue, adeptly played by Keely Chretien.
Ella tries to improve the lives of her clients by sharing information she hears from other clients. She falls in love with one of her clients, the playwright Jeffrey Moss, skillfully portrayed by Luc Tellier, and is determined to meet him. However, because Ella livens up her workday by adopting different identities - and voices - for her clients, Jeffrey Moss thinks she's an old woman, and calls her ''Mom''.
Further problems arise when the police investigate the answering service, suspecting a front for an escort service, and the owner's shady boyfriend Sandor, masterfully played by Jared Walroth, who unbeknownst to Sue is using the agency as a bookmaking operation.
The play was a smashing success, thanks to the amazing talents of the cast, and the skillful direction of Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Fleming.
