The Board of Trustees is pleased to provide you with the highlights of our recent Board meeting held on Tuesday January 10, 2012. The adopted minutes will be available on our website following the next Regular Board meeting.

Upcoming Trustee Activities:

  • Trustees will be participating in an Education Planning session with Senior Executive and Lead Team.
  • Trustees will be participating in a video conference session on Freedom of Information laws when dealing with petitions, delegations and board documents.

Updates:

  • A presentation on the High School Resource Officer was offered to the Board of Trustees, by Constable Pat Chornoby and Inspector Graham, from the R.C.M.P. Constable Chornoby highlighted the mandate of the program and shared information on activities and success stories. Constable Chornoby sees her role as an opportunity to build bridges between the community, the schools and the police. The primary role of a school resource officer should be as a law educator, closely followed by a law counsellor and finally as a law enforcement officer. As she states she sees her job as first to teach, second to reach and third to preach. The feedback from all stakeholders has been very positive.
  • Principal of Parkland Village School, Sheryl Bridgeman, Jacqueline Allen and Felicia Ochs gave a presentation on the Parkland Village Resiliency Project – Evolve. Evolve is a school and community led initiative that seeks to empower partners in Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, and Parkland County to respond effectively to the needs of the Parkland Village Community. The goal of Evolve is to increase knowledge and skills of children and youth to enable them to make better choices and adopt behaviours to self-protect their physical and mental health. This project was made possible through an anonymous donor.
  • The Board of Trustees received as information the First Quarter Financial Report – period ending November 31, 2011
  • The Board of Trustees approved the nomination of Trustee Kinsey, Trustee Goebel and Trustee Linder to sit on the Edwin Parr Selection Committee. The role of the committee is to review the nominations of first year teachers and to choose a teacher to represent Parkland School Division for the Alberta School Boards’ Association’s Edwin Parr Award.
