Board Meeting Highlights - October 4, 2011 

 

The Board of Trustees is pleased to provide you with the highlights of our recent Board meeting held on Tuesday October 4, 2011. The adopted minutes will be available on this website following the next Regular Board meeting. 

Organizational Meeting

The Board of Trustees held their Organizational Meeting and the following appointments were approved.

  • Chairperson for the 2011-2012 school year will be Trustee Richard Gilchrist

  • Trustees approved the 2011-2012 Meeting Calendar dates and the Board Work Plan. Starting in November the Regular Board Meetings will start at 6:30 pm.
  • Trustees gave approval for the Trustee Remuneration Schedule.
  • Trustees approved the following amended Policies:
    • Policy 7, Article 10 – Public Participation at Board Meetings. This change was made to reflect the addition of the Recess/Question Period that is now part of the Regular Board Meeting agenda.
    • Policy 8, Article 9 – Standing Committee. A new committee was added to the Standing Committee list. PSD Tomorrow Committee was added, this committee is not open to the public, however the minutes from the meeting will be included in the Trustee Reports for information.
    • Policy 9, Article 6 – Board Representation. The Linkages committee was added to the list of Board Representation

Upcoming Trustee Activities:

  • Trustees will be hosting the Shikaoi Luncheon on October 12, 2011. Delegates from Shikaoi, Japan and councilors from the Town of Stony Plain will be joining the Trustees for lunch organized by the Foods Class at Memorial Composite High School.
  • Trustee Gilchrist will be attending the “Innovative Learning Environments” (ILE) Conference on October 10-12, 2011 being held in Banff, Alberta at the invitation of Alberta Education.
  • Trustee Cameron and Trustee Heinrichs will be attending the 21st Century Learning Leadership Conference on October 12-14, 2011 being held at Banff, Alberta.
  • Trustees are looking forward to the first Student Advisory Committee Meeting to be held Tuesday, October 18, 2011 starting at 9 am.
  • The Board of Trustees will be attending the Public School Boards’ Association Fall AGM from October 19-22, 2011 in Edmonton, Alberta.
  • Five Trustees will be attending the ASBA Legal Conference on October 31 to November 1, 2011 being held in Calgary, Alberta

Updates:

  • Chair Gilchrist provided a Board Chair’s report, some of the highlights are:
    • Provided highlights on the ASBA/ATA/Alberta Education – Fall Transformation Meeting held September 22, 2011. He attended the workshop with Trustee Kilduff and Superintendent Monds.
    • The Board received a letter from Alberta Education – Infrastructure, informing the Board that funding has been approved for the demolition of the old Memorial Composite High School and mechanical system upgrades for the new Memorial High School.
  • Superintendent Monds gave a verbal report on projects and learning opportunities. The report focused on:
    • The Resource Officer for the High Schools has been hired and has begun working.
    • The School Division has received a donation toward a program called the Parkland Village Resiliency Program. This program will offer after school programming and activities enhancing student esteem and leadership skills.
    • Superintendent Monds has been invited by Alberta Education and the Japanese Government to visit Japan with a group of educators and administrators to explore language and cultural opportunities. Reports:

  • The Enrolment report was not available and so it will be forwarded to stakeholders once the information has been received.
  • Trustees approved the attendance boundary changes for new subdivisions in the Town of Stony Plain.
  • Received as information minutes from various Committees including:
    • Education Committee
    • Audit Committee
    • PSD Tomorrow Committee

Next Regular Board Meeting will be held on November 1, 2011 at 6:30 pm Centre for Education
