On January 7, Duffield students participated in their first Spirit Day of 2011. This Spirit Day included a Students Convention. Leanne Schram-White and Shauna Wray arranged guest speakers to facilitate 20-minute sessions that included speaking, and an activity, craft, or game. Each guest spoke about their business, how they contribute to the community, and what it is like to own or work for that business.
Guests included:
- Keynote: Kelly Wilkins, Deputy Superintendent
- Stony Plain Mayor Ken Lemke
- Stony Plain Multicultural Heritage Centre
- Glen Boyd, song writing
- Representatives from Tim Hortons
- Corporal Don Price, Stony Plain RCMP
- Representatives from Parkland Fire and Rescue
- Stephanie Mills, owner So Chic Salon and Spa
- Susan Ritter, Alberta Treasury Branch
- Dr. Kathy Saker, from Spruce Grove Veterinary
- Representatives from Crock-A-Doodle
- Séamus Smyth, writer for The Stony Plain Reporter
School usually holds one or two Spirit Days a month. The students are placed in groups of 25-30 students from every grade, and participate in various activities to build student morale, cohesiveness and spirit.
In previous Spirit Days, students participated in activities such as: outdoor physical activities; read a Dr. Seuss book and completed an activity based on the book; created a Christmas decoration and wrote a verse to the tune of Jingle Bells describing Duffield spirit; and used recycled materials to create robots.
