New Report Cards

What's new with our new report card?

Over the next two school years (2011-2012 and 2012-2013), Parkland School Division (PSD) is moving to a new report card format for grades kindergarten through nine. Our goal is to ensure that the new report card is easy to read and understand. It’s more student-focused, and focuses on ‘how’ students learn as opposed to 'what' they learn.

The report card is one small part of the student assessment picture. PSD is focused on a bigger picture view to ensure we are improving student learning. With this bigger picture in mind, our new report card has moved away from using letter grades and percentages, toward a greater emphasis on how students learn. By focusing on ‘how’ students learn, as opposed to ‘what’ they learn, we’re able to ensure that student learning is enhanced.

We have made student assessment a priority over the last decade. Our new report card is the latest of many efforts in this regard. By focusing more on how students learn, teachers are better able to support the growth and development of our students.

Our new approach focuses on the broader knowledge and skills that students should learn in each subject. Student performance is then reported in one of three categories: established, developing, or emerging.

We appreciate that our new report card is a significant change – one that requires ongoing communication with parents, students, teachers, and other stakeholders. And, we’re committed to hearing from you as we complete the transition. We will be providing additional opportunities that will allow our stakeholders to provide feedback on the report card over the months ahead.

Quick Facts resource has been prepared to answer some of the basic questions regarding the new PSD report card.
