PARKLAND SCHOOL DIVISION

First Nation, Metis and Inuit  Support Services

Parkland is committed to enhancing the well-being of and educational opportunities for First Nation, Metis and Inuit students. We further recognize and celebrate their history, rights, cultures and languages.

Support services for our students are organized under our First Nation, Metis and Inuit (FNMI) Program. This program organizes its resources to:

  • assist aboriginal students through academic, social and emotional/behavioural supports;

  • coordinate collaborative efforts by school staff, parents, First Nations officials, outside agencies and Division support facilitators in developing and implementing strategies to foster higher levels of student achievement, readiness to learn, increased student school completion rates and heightened communication between schools and homes; and

  • increase awareness by all stakeholders of the Aboriginal culture and endeavor to make available to all students a variety of aboriginal education programs.

FNMI Liaison Workers in Parkland School Division schools make communication with parents a priority, both in terms of regular contact and in seeking input to provide the most appropriate kinds of educational interventions and support for students.

Likewise, the communication between the FNMI Program Liaison Workers, the School Council, parents of Aboriginal Children and the Paul First Nations Education Director provides important input for the development of native education programs, public awareness in-services and opportunities for celebrating various aspects of aboriginal culture.
