The Stony Creek program is an alternative education program of choice that serves students in Grades 1 – 9.
Students participate in educational programming both at home and at school:
Grades 1-6
- Tuesdays and Thursdays: at school (Science, Social Studies, PE, and option courses).
- Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays: at home (Language Arts, Math, and Health programs as well as supplement the PE and option programming).
Grades 7-9
- Tuesdays and Thursdays + alternate Mondays*: at school (Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, PE, and option courses)
- Mondays*, Wednesdays and Fridays: at home (Math, and Health programs as well as supplement the PE and option programming).
*Students have the option of coming in to school on alternate Mondays.
There are three multi-graded classrooms, usually Grades 1, 3, 5 then 2, 4, 6 and 7, 8, 9, although can change depending upon student distribution over the grades.
The home component of the program is supervised by teachers who conduct home visits to work collaboratively with parents to create programs that meet the learning outcomes of the Alberta curriculum. There is flexibility for parents to choose resources that they feel meet the needs of their children with teacher approval. Home visits occur monthly and may be supplemented by workshops at CFL to assist parents with skills and strategies to support their home instruction. A small home education grant is available to support the home component of the program.
Participation in the Stony Creek program also requires that parents attend school to deliver teacher planned classroom activities for a half day each month. Parents are required to attend the Annual General Meeting at the start of each school year. As well, each family is expected to take on a volunteering role to enrich the program for students. This could include fulfilling a role on the Parent Advisory Committee, organizing hot lunch each month, assisting with class projects or events, chaperoning fieldtrips, etc.
Students in Grades 3, 6, and 9 are expected to write Provincial Achievements Tests.
