This is the first draft of the instructions for this event. This page will be updated as loopholes are identified, and the official rules of the competition will be posted to this address no later than February 1, 2001. No rule changes will be made between February 1, 2001 and the competition date (March 10, 2001).
In this event students will build and fly a straw rocket from a design and materials provided on site the morning of the competition.
MATERIALS

RULES
1. Teams will construct a straw rocket according to the plan provided and using only the materials provided.
2. Teams will be given three trial flights.
3. Teams will be allowed a ten-minute repair or modification time period.
4. Teams will be given an additional three trial flights.
JUDGING CRITERIA
1. The winner of this event will be the individual or team that builds a straw rocket that flies the greatest horizontal distance measured from the release line indicated on the floor of the gym to the point at which the straw rocket first makes contact with the ground.
2. All six trials will be recorded, but the results are based on the farthest of the six flights. In case of a tie, the second-longest flight between the two tied teams will be used to break the tie.
