Woodhaven has long been noted for its academic excellence. Now that we are entering into the new era of being a middle school, we intend to continue this tradition. We also hope you notice some differences occurring over the next few years.
You will see an emphasis on:
- Assessment for Learning
- We want to report on what students can do and what they need to work on… you need more than just a mark.
- Increase in the use of technology in the classroom
- We want to see our students be proficient in using a variety of software to demonstrate what they have learned.
- We want our students to clearly be able to tell you why they are learning the material they are studying
- If a student can’t answer the question "Why do I need to know this?", we need to examine why we are teaching it the way we are.
The Academic Program
The hallmark of a true Middle School is equity in programming. Everybody from the youngest to the most senior student gets access to all facilities and programs. At Woodhaven we have truly lived up to this goal!
Grade 5 and 6
This is the transition year into the school. The students will be the responsibility of a Grade 5 team who will organize all Grade 5’s into instructional groupings by need. These groupings are flexible and allow the team to meet the individual needs of students in a timely fashion.
Grade 5 and 6 students get access to option programming ... just like the older students. Rotating on a quarterly basis, they get to take:
-Foods
-woodworking
-drama
-music
-art
Grade 7
Grade 7’ s core curriculum is taught to homeroom groupings. This year we hired an additional teacher to reduce our class sizes to 22 per group. All students take French programming, daily PE and one additional complimentary course.
Complimentary courses are termed and students select new courses three times per year. There are a wide range of options for the students to choose from including:
- Drama
- Cooking
- Building construction
- Industrial Arts
- Introduction to Computers
Grade 8 and 9
The Grade 8 and 9 program is similar to the 6/7 program but students have the opportunity to delve into areas of interest in the arts. In the fine arts students move between the three Spruce Grove Middle Schools to the site which specializes in a particular area.
